Shopify Checklist for eCommerce Business Owners

As “woo-woo” as it may sound, your business mindset matters.

Having a healthy business mindset fosters creativity, stimulates critical thinking, and leads to better business decisions – the building blocks for long-term success.

Conversely, having an unhealthy mindset dwells on the negative aspects of your circumstances or situation, hindering your potential and stifling your success.

So, why wouldn’t you want to give it the attention it deserves?

As an eComm entrepreneur, your business mindset is the framework that dictates the way you…

      • think about your problems
      • determine solutions
      • strategize your business building approach.

Prior to owning my digital marketing agency, I worked many years for a major retailer. I have learned (sometimes the hard way), from both a corporate and eComm perspective, that mindset influences decisions and determines success – be it negative or positive.

It’s human nature to compare yourself and your journey to other business owners in the online space. You see the success stories of your competitors and lay awake at night trying to figure out why they’re experiencing more success than you.

That can be a dangerous road to travel, as it can pollute the way you think about your business and keep you from accomplishing your goals.

However, it can also be a springboard of motivation that catapults you toward your own personal success – if you let it.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve drooled over other people’s booming businesses and spent way too much time and energy trying to figure out what they’re doing in their business that I’m not.

      • Why are they more successful than me?
      • Is there something happening behind the scenes that I’m not seeing?

Like any normal human being, I would succumb to the spiraling trap of admiring (ok, envying) the successes of other people’s businesses. And the same lens through which I clearly saw others’ success was the same lens that magnified my failures.

When you’re focused on the success of others, you don’t see your own success and tend to self-sabotage everything you wish you would have done.

Without fail, this “spiraling trap” of envy leads to unproductive responses like…

      • Procrastination – You put off doing the things that would actually move your business forward.
      • Overwhelm – You feel steamrolled by everything you need to do.
      • Distraction – You fall into the trap of thinking you “need” one more course or training before you can take your next step.

Not gonna lie, it’s taken me a really long time in my career to recognize the consequences of an unhealthy mindset on both myself and my business.

And one of my biggest AHA moments was understanding how critical it is to recognize when I’ve fallen into that unhealthy mindset trap and knowing what I need to do to get out of it.

Unfortunately, there’s no “one size fits all” formula for a healthy mindset shift.

Every business owner should spend some time developing a personal escape plan for when (not if) their mindset needs to shift.

What triggers shift your mindset in the wrong direction? Do you recognize the symptoms of an unhealthy mindset and are you prepared with a plan to kick that negativity to the curb?
