What is the difference between a business coach and a consultant? 

Unfortunately, there’s a misunderstanding when it comes to defining who they are and what they do – especially in the online space. Many use the term synonymously, which causes even more confusion among eComm business owners when deciding which one they actually need. 

In a nutshell, a business coach works with an individual to equip them with tools to solve a specific problem. They address issues such as fear, mindset, a lack of self-confidence, etc. – from a personal and professional perspective. 

On the other hand, a business consultant is an expert in a particular area who actually solves the problem for an organization. They find and apply solutions for problems directly related to your business. 

 

A business COACH is an expert who…

      • Assesses an individual’s strengths and weaknesses
      • Serves as a sounding board to help an individual think through the noise of building a company
      • Guides development of particular skill set(s)
      • Helps individuals use personal and professional skills to better their business
      • Develops business growth strategies and creates tasks to help individuals accomplish them
      • Typically works on a long-term basis

 

A business CONSULTANT is an expert who…

      • Possesses a level of expertise in specific areas (marketing, finance, growth strategies, product launching, automation, systems development, etc.)
      • Conducts research to uncover issues stunting company growth
      • Analyzes data to gain insight and understanding of the client’s business
      • Provides strategies and solutions for the problems they’ve discovered
      • Works with clients and their teams to ensure recommendations are executed appropriately
      • Typically works on a short-term basis (i.e. 90 days, 6 months, etc.)

It’s unfortunate that most eComm business owners and entrepreneurs work to grow and scale their businesses without the help and support from either one of these experts. It’s often because they don’t recognize the availability and value of these experienced professionals.

How do you know if you need a business coach or a consultant?

At the end of the day, it truly depends on where you are in your business.
